Baytown Carbon Capture Project
Project Case Study:
In 2023, Hollaway provided critical project development support to Calpine Corporation – a national leader in developing carbon capture and storage projects. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a group of technologies that trap CO2 and permanently store it thousands of feet below the ground surface, where it is safely contained and eliminated from the atmosphere. Baytown Energy proposed to construct a carbon capture facility near the existing Baytown Energy Center facility on 60 acres of land consisting of mostly undeveloped forested land. Proposed activities included the construction of a CCS facility, as well as a new roadway crossing with a culvert over Saw Pit Gully. The proposed CCS facility included cooling towers, storage tanks, an electrical yard, process areas, offices, water storage tanks, a water treatment plant, and a detention pond – all surrounded by a 25-foot wide access road and a perimeter fence.
Qualified Hollaway biologists conducted a desktop review and pedestrian survey to verify the presence or absence of suitable habitat for state or protected species (federally listed species, migratory birds, and golden and bald eagles). Hollaway prepared a memorandum summarizing the results (suitable habitat for one federal candidate species, one proposed federal threatened species, and one state listed species) and provided recommendations for avoidance and best management practices. Hollaway also formally coordinated with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Wildlife Habitat Assessment (WHAB) Program for project review and recommendations.
